What is a show like?
If you haven’t been to a Humor U show before, you can expect to see eight to twelve different Humor U comedians perform their own original stand-up comedy. All performers are BYU students and the shows are for family audiences. Sometimes we have a live band, and sometimes we slingshot t-shirts into the audience, or give away free stuff - we like to keep the shows fun and exciting. Each show is live and lasts around an hour and fifteen minutes. Except for off campus shows, or shows titled “Best Of…”, all the material is new and has never been performed before – so if you came to the last show, the next show will be all new jokes. And since students are always graduating, we usually have one or two new performers in each show.
What is Humor U?
Humor U is a club that provides BYU students specific focused opportunities to develop the gift of humor through writing, rehearsing, and performing stand-up comedy. We are constantly writing and producing new material. We produce a new show approximately every six weeks and then perform it multiple times in a given week.
How is Humor U Different from Divine Comedy or Laugh Out Loud?
· Humor U performs stand-up comedy. Stand-up comedy is one person performing rehearsed comedy. Examples include Brian Regan, Jeff Foxworthy, and Jerry Seinfeld.
· Divine Comedy performs sketch comedy. Sketch comedy is a cast of performers performing rehearsed comedy. Examples include Saturday Night Live and MAD TV.
· Laugh Out Loud performs improvisational comedy. Improvisational comedy is a cast of performers performing improvised comedy. Examples include Who’s Line Is It Anyway and Comedy Sportz.
What is Humor U's story?
Humor U was started at BYU in the fall of 2006 by a few funny students who wanted a vehicle and opportunities to share their comedic talents. There were other comedy groups at BYU that performed sketch or improvisational comedy, but no place for stand-up. The niche was waiting to be filled. Humor U quickly attracted some of the funniest performers at BYU and since 2008 has had the largest crowds of any stand-up comedy club in Utah. In the beginning, we took anyone who wanted to perform and our first show was to an audience of fifty people, now over seventy people audition each year and we perform for over a thousand people in a weekend - selling out every show we produce since our second semester. Humor U continues to grow on and off BYU campus, performing almost thirty shows a year to over 12,000 people. Humor U also performs for LDS Institutes outside of Utah.
Is Humor U a Business?
No. All Humor U performers are BYU students who volunteer their time and talents, they receive no compensation or class credit. Revenues are used to cover the costs of producing shows. Because of our success, Humor U is able to regularly donate our show revenues to charity.
Can I join Humor U?
Are you pretty funny? If you would like to perform with Humor U, we invite you to audition with us. Open-Mic Auditions are held each fall and spring and sometimes at other times during the year. BYU students who wish to audition are asked to perform a three minuet stand-up comedy set that is both appropriate and original. Open-mic Auditions for Humor U are free and open to the public, so bring your friends. Email us for specific audition dates and information. We'll send you some preparation tips to help you have a better audition. We also welcome people into the club to fill non-performing positions with responsibilities such as: advertising, web design, marketing, design work, video support and production, audio support, and dancers. If you've got a band and you'd like to play at one of our shows, let us know. |
